How We Choose Movies

One of the questions we hear most often is, “How do you decide what to review next?”

The short answer is: there’s no single formula.

Every year, we build a release calendar that balances continuing retrospectives, brand-new series, current theatrical releases, one-off reviews, listener requests, and special events. It’s a puzzle that often takes months to assemble. And then not a week goes by that it doesn’t change.

Continuing the Story

Whenever a franchise we’ve already covered releases a new movie, that usually becomes our highest priority.

If we’ve reviewed every Mission: Impossible, Marvel, or Jurassic Park film, we want to be there when the next chapter arrives. Longtime listeners have followed those retrospectives for years, and we enjoy continuing them as new entries are released.

Looking Beyond the New Releases

While we review many current theatrical releases, Now Playing Podcast isn’t built around opening weekends.

Some of our most popular series revisit franchises that ended decades ago, explore the complete filmography of a director, or examine a collection of movies connected by a common theme. We believe a great movie discussion doesn’t depend on a movie being new.

Listener Feedback Matters

Many of our reviews begin with a suggestion from a listener.

We regularly receive recommendations through email, social media, surveys, Patreon, and our online community. While we can’t review every requested movie immediately, those suggestions help us discover new series, identify overlooked films, and understand what listeners are excited to hear us discuss.

Building the Calendar

Stuart carefully plans our review schedule literally years in advance.

Finding room for every series we’d like to cover is one of the biggest challenges we face. We have to balance returning franchises, new retrospectives, seasonal programming, current releases, and standalone reviews while making sure the overall schedule feels varied and interesting throughout the year.

A series might be delayed not because we’ve forgotten about it, but because we’re waiting for the right place on the calendar.

There Will Always Be More Movies

No matter how many reviews we produce, there will always be another franchise, another classic, another cult favorite, or another hidden gem waiting to be discussed.

That’s one of the joys of movies.

After reviewing nearly two thousand films, we still have an ever-growing list of ideas for future retrospectives and standalone reviews. We can’t promise exactly when we’ll reach a particular title, but if listeners keep watching movies, we’ll keep talking about them.
