I hope this clears things up, guys. I apologize for the complicated comic knowledge but it’s the best way I can explain Marvel’s time travel rules.
*SPOILERS*
While years (let’s say, 2023) are concurrent through the multiverse. Events are not.
The branches at the end of Loki S1 were created between the End of Time and the Beginning of Time a-new. There is no year for that event because it is within a void between time. Normally time is circular and repeats infinitely, unless something within that threshold occurs that disrupts the timeline. Anything that branches from that point from on, starting from the Beginning of Time, is retroactively concurrent with the main timeline at that point.
And the villains in No Way Home were basically plucked from specific moments in the past due to Dr. Strange’s botched spell(?). From what I can understand on that.
On the other hand, for Across the Spider-Verse, disregarding the changes brought about in the background, is set in 2020. The first film was set in December 2018 based on a calendar in the background of one scene matching that specific month, plus the winter weather.
It is intentionally *not* set in 2021-2023 or later because of the plot revolving around “canon events”. Those are events from the past set in stone that no one from another universe can interfere with because it would create a paradox that ultimately destroys that timeline they changed.
HOWEVER, this is different than someone within that same universe time-traveling and causing changes that create a branch. (example: Coulson’s team in Agents of SHIELD season 7 went to their universes past, but later in the season caused a branch when too many changes occurred.) Since the individual is still time traveling within that home-universe and when causing changes to the home-universe’s past it branches instead of a universe-destroying paradox.
Basically, if you’re from some other completely different universe and you create timeline changes to this other universe’s past, you’ve corrupted the balance of the timeline by bringing outside elements/forces into another past and creating changes. This upsets the natural order and it obliterates everything within that universe, timeline-included.
This is also known as an Incursion.
(Speculation sidenote: That MIGHT be tied to Loki, as what the TVA was attempting to prevent (and perhaps what Kang ultimately wants to do). Resetting/’rewinding’ the timeline before it can become a branch and arresting the individual who cased the change (Sylvie or Loki), as opposed to changing it after the fact (the TVA’s “red line”) thus obliterating an entire universe.)
